Christus am Kreuz

Christus am Kreuz
Lucas Cranach
Oil on canvas, 1571

In 1538, Luther summarizes the essence of his Reformation discovery: "He who takes to heart the words 'Anyone who believes in me,' will not have to fear the Last Judgment."

Cranach the Younger shows the crucified in complete loneliness here. The English translation of the text on the painting reads as follows: "O man, you look at me, instead look at yourself and your own guilt because I would not have had to die if you had not been worth of death."
