Tire Pressure

Happens every fall. One cold morning, I go to start the car, and the tire inflation alert on my dashboard lights up. Something to do with molecules. According to United Tire and Service News,

"Air contracts when the temperature drops—and the air inside your tires is no exception. The reason this occurs has to do with the speed at which air molecules move. The lower the temperature, the slower they become. Slow-moving molecules are smaller, take up less space, and don't push up against the walls of your tires with as much pressure.

So, no, your tire pressure isn't low on cold days because your tires haven't technically lost air. (In fact, your tire pressure will likely go right back to normal the minute it gets warmer.) It's dangerous to drive on even mildly deflated tires, though. It can damage your tires, as well as potentially cause an accident, so always err on the side of caution and give your tire pressure a quick check to be sure. If they genuinely need more air, go ahead and top them off to be on the safe side."

Falling Leaves

Seems like there's always a difference between what we call meteorological fall and, well, let's just say when it actually begins to look and feel like fall. This week . . . it's definitely beginning to look and feel like fall.

Helene

Well, it was a busy afternoon and evening here yesterday, filled with all sorts of ominous weather alerts about possible flooding and tornadoes. Today I'll get out to survey what damage might have occurred locally, although I think the worst of it probably was just west of here, across the James River.

Sprung

Despite today's expected rain and cool temperatures might suggest, spring has sprung. Redbuds and buttercups never lie. :-)

Frigid

Haven't ventured out into the cold much in the past several days. This photo was from January 16, 2022. Just goes to show that this week in January is often one of the coldest of the year here.

In-Between

Yep, it's been that kind of weather here. Kind of in-between sunny and pleasant and everything else. So it probably was a wise idea to carry an extra wrap with you just in case.

Survivor

On the corner of Duke of Gloucester (aka Dog Street) and Palace Green Street now hangs this lovely wreath. Amazingly, it survived the rain storm that swept up the east coast this past Sunday night. Well anchored, I'd say.

Nimbostratus?

Not sure what kind of cloud formation this is. My best guess, based upon this excerpt from Wikipedia, is that it is an example of nimbostratus clouds:

"A nimbostratus cloud is a multilevel, amorphous, nearly uniform, and often dark-grey cloud that usually produces continuous rain, snow, or sleet, but no lightning or thunder.

Although it is usually a low-based cloud, it actually forms most commonly in the middle level of the troposphere and then spreads vertically into the low and high levels. Nimbostratus usually produces precipitation over a wide area."

The Fall

Take just a few days apart, the photo above shows a Gingko tree in all its autumn glory, and then . . .

the great fall. :-)

Bliss

Fall, leaves, fall; die, flowers, away;
Lengthen night and shorten day;
Every leaf speaks bliss to me,
Fluttering from the autumn tree.
I shall smile when wreaths of snow
Blossom where the rose should grow;
I shall sing when night’s decay
Ushers in a drearier day.

Shot these photos this past Thursday evening before the effects of Tropical Storm Ophelia began to be felt.

Weather Station

I could enjoy, I think, having a weather station like the one at York River State Park shown above but I doubt my homeowners association would approve. :-)

Partly cloudy sky over Jamestown High School.

Signs

I sometimes think summer will last forever, and that these days when afternoon temperatures reach into the 90s will never end. Then . . . I look up, like I did yesterday, only to discover that, in fact, as Bob Dylan put it, "the times they are a-changin" after all. That epiphany came when I noticed the walnuts dropping from this tree, a sure sign that autumn is on the way.
