A surprising discovery this morning! The genus, hydrangea, was "first described from Virginia in North America," according to this article in Wikipedia. I doubt that I'll ever look at these blooms the same way again. :-)
I just checked out that Wikipedia article and gave up when they got to the part about aluminum. I knew that people manipulate the pH of the soil for the colors, but the details are rather mind-boggling.
